Phone manufacturer Nokia has come up with a device that uses pedal power alone to charge up batteries.

It uses a cable that connects to a dynamo, which charges when the wheels turn, and comes with a phone holder that straps to the handlebars.

For an average handset, cycling at speed of 10 miles an hour for 10 minutes will give you around 28 minutes of talk-time or 37 minutes of standby, according to Nokia.

Telecommunication Services in Maldives - Few Statistics and Graphs

I was reading through MPND statistical year book 2009 today. Though the data published was sorted in table form I thought it would be much interactive in graphical form, so here I present you a few statistical graphs.

I plan to publish these graphs in series about various aspects of Maldivian economy.

For a starter these are sample graphs about telecom services in Maldives, where there are two major operators, Dhiraagu and Wataniya Telecom. Raajje Online seems a small player in the market though it has kick-started with a heavy promotional campaign for its Broadband internet services.

Back in 2007 pre-paid connections were sold for Rf.100, this price decreased to as low as Rf.50 for a kit in 2008. This effect shows very clearly in the graph where in 2008 it crossed more than 4,35,000 subscribers which includes post-paid and pre-paid connections.

Internet subscriptions in 2008 totaled 17,864.

In the year 2007, there is a significant increase in mobile phone calls while landline calls show a diminishing trend. Promotional campaigns between both operators had a big impact on the market.

When we crossed 2007, ‘on average’ every person in Maldives had a mobile phone.

I'm not talking politics here, but about making a change in our attitude, towards life and religion. it is of no doubt that this is the month of prayers, even the person who never crossed over the door of a mosque for one whole year will appear for prayers in Ramazan. its an amazing event to see long lines of people praying on the roads at prayer times.

The burglers season is on. No doubt that dawn of the first day of Ramzan broke with the news of a burglery. Staying awake, playing games till morning and sleeping till next day afternoon gives an open chance to burglers, this is where we need 'a change' in our attitude.

we need 'a change' here too. Praying isn't special to Ramazan, it has to be summoned everyday, even if you are on-the-go, whenever, wherever you are.

As this is the month which the Qur'an was first revealed, we are supposed to spend time reading and listening it.

may Allah bestow the best blessings to you in this Holy Ramazan.

I got blown away when i saw this price tag. where's this $199, its ok if the price is a littlemore than 199 but $720 is too much, man too much.

and the worst part is with that price you can't use all the features of iphone, some 3G features are disabled because we don't have 3G in India.

what can i say? this airtel and vodafone guys wanna make some serious bucks but I guess few people can afford that.

From Coimbatore to Madurai another 5 hours.

It's a learning experience to see how people make a living on the remoter villages where fewer infrastructure is available.

We saw this huge windmills setup in a vast area, like our grandpa's palm tree field. These creatures are really tall (nearly the height of 5 coconut trees) spreading to a vast area creating a buzz sound in the atmosphere.

This accident happened the night before on the highway we drove. The truck driver was driving drunken at high speed and couldn't see the small car flashing through and both crashed, the witnesses say. The driver in that car was crushed so badly and found dead after few minutes. That's why they always say, " don't drink and drive".

My friend and I were travelling from Mysore to Madurai last July. These are snaps from Mysore to Coimbatore - a 5 hour journey by car.

It was late evening, probably the best time of the day to photograph. You wouldn't be bored to see the rice and sunflower fields pass by while people rush side by side across the highway.

We made a stopover at Coimbatore, a busy shopping area, you can judge it alone by street side billboards. You will find a lot of restaurants open till late night but its always good to be cautioned at the hygiene factor.

After a good night of sleep at the hotel, the next day (Day 2) we set out again to Madurai.

pinhole camera project is developing quite well. this time results were more brighter and prettier than expected. a white screen was inserted and pictures turned out damn good than previous shots.

These are some pictures from the box. (click for larger image)

as you can see in this picture, black rectangle is without white screen but right part is much brighter on white screen.

I've pushed up ISO @ 800, so somehow noise is visible here and shutter speed @ 64 seconds.

this picture below is something special and I liked it very much.. focus, blur, sky, lighting, exposure, this is perfect for me. you judge it ; /

I'm trying to shoot some night shots but the big challenge here is making the box light proof. Somehow I can see some progress, so I shall try it to bring it over here.

holiday project : making a digital pinhole camera

well well, this is a field I've been waiting to experience. Finally, I made a pinhole camera on my own, thanks to the Internet. That wasn't so hard as this 'digital' word rushes in. Most pinhole photographers use film cameras and it seems really tiring to get a fine result but I got the digital version and its much easier as it breaks down the darkroom process. If you wanna see how I made it, go ahead...this is not a detailed tutorial but something to show how and what I used to make it ; )

I used an empty electric iron box, fits for the use.

then made it light proof with masking tape (black is prefferable) and later made inside black so that light does not reflect in the box. please note that inside walls has to be full black.

this is the pin hole. pin hole is made by making a small hole using a needle in an aluminium foil, then pasted to the square cutting.

the big hole is the lens insert for the digital camera. camera has to be positioned to the inside front wall so that it captures pin hole light that touches on the wall. when image is captured the round circle has to be tight enough to block leaking light into the box.

and now it's ready for for action! its light-weight, unique design ; ) even if it isn't that handy to carry on your bag its good for home use. this is a shot without digital camera attached.

this is the first shot, it was pretty good though it captured something but full black. I couldn't set the exact shutter speed to catch a well exposed shot. (pls don't click for a larger image : ] )

so next, I based the pinhole box camera at tube light, that was a great success and the pin hole camera proved to be working!

this shot is captured in the morning. actually you can see some palm trees and think that white part is the sky. the line strips seen here are box tracks on the black surface and it needs to be refurbished.

Create HDR image in 5 steps.

HDR is termed as High Dynamic Range which dramatizes different exposures and intensity of colours in one image. The darker and lighter areas of the image are neutralized to create a cool atmosphere and it gives a whole new colour intensity levels.

Creating HDR image is simple. You don’t need to own a high end DSLR to create HDR because Photomatix opens a new frontier for your creativity.

I have used Photomatix software here but this can be done in Photoshop CS3 too, but Photomatix has more intelligent tone mapping features which enhance lot of details of the image.

Follow these steps and see the drama it creates. ; p

1. Shoot 3 shots with different exposure; 1 with correct exposure, 1 little lighter, 1 little dark. Its okay if you have more than 3 shots, but 3 shots will do the job.

2. Open Photomatix > Click Generate HDR image > browse and select three shots with 3 different exposure > then OK

3. Now the photo will be generated. You will get a result something like this.

The image may appear darker and some areas of the image will be highly exposed. Now the solution is, go to the TONE MAPPING button on the left.

4. Set the strength, colour saturation, luminosity, and so on. Each of these elements will bring much more detailing and colour intensity.

Below the histogram you can see tone, colour, micro and saturation tabs where you can switch white and black point with gama settings as well.

Play with these settings to get the desired effect you like.

5. Now click PROCESS and there you go!

See the difference with the original picture and the Photomatix version.

Recently, my friend and I made a run to one of the customer service offices of Airtel, one of the biggest telecom company of India, planning to settle a soon-to-be-due $30 internet bill. Since the office closes at 5.00 pm, we had to rush through the draconian evening traffic with the 'Indian taxi'.
Apparently, we made it there quite in time at around 4.30 pm, there were few minutes before quitting time. About 7 local customers were up for their intolerable patience to reach the cash counter while staffs with wrinkes rippling on their forehead like Sahara desert sand dunes.
Since there were no electronic queueing system, the smart, the hard-ass with the guts is the winner who makes his move all the way to the front chair.
As we were teenagers and being tiny foreigners on the face of muscled local giants we had to sit back and couldn't murmur a word as we were just to pass the boiling point of our blood. One couldn't express the despair as the clock makes its way to the next 10th minute and being stuck up inside of that messy, crack walled microwave oven with that disgusting stink smell of the crowd that would obviuosly burn hairs of your nose.
At this point, the female staff with that white shirt was having a great time calling her boyfriend when she held her phone between the head and shoulder while acting like she's very commited to her work. Perhaps, she might have forgotten what her job was. One of the old aged man was having the time of his life, at times one would wonder whether this guy is amazed by a pair of young pigeons somehow landed on her head and grazing there.
"Please", she uttured showing us the way to the front seat. We offerd her the bill with the money wondering how on earth I came here to see this girl smiling and giggling to her boyfriend when she broke the silence in front of me and everyone.

Doctors always recommend to have something on your breakfast, it keeps you alive for the days work.
so here is a simple, easy, 5-min-to-make breakfast just before you scratch the bug off your ass in the morning.

this is what you need.
1. 2 eggs.
2. 1/2-3/4 cup of milk.
3. 1/2 tbs ground black pepper.
4. 8 slices toast bread.
5. 250 g cheese.
6. 4 slices ham or 100g sliced salami.
7. chilli powder to season.

how to do it.
1. beat the egg, milk and pepper together.
2. spread the cheese on the slices of bread and top it with salami. Top other slices to make bread.
3. heat butter on a frying pan.
4. when the pan is hot dip the sandwich into the egg mixture and coat it.
5. cook over a moderate heat until it is golden.
6. flip other sides until golden.
7. repeat the same for other sandwiches as well.

now, it is ready to serve, if you want to make it more lively serve with a fresh friut juice.
enjoy the taste with this purely simple, deliciuos item.

Her admission to a hospital near Amstetten in Austria was the trigger that led to the unraveling of Fritzel's double life. Doctors demanded a medical history of Kerstin which appealed her mother Elisabeth to come forward publicly. Police arrested Fritzel and Elisabeth near the hospital.

I'm sure that you have heard of this word at various occasions.
"Obi Noavey". This word has really caught up in the air nowadays, especially among the youths of Maldives.

This word stands for the meaning like "varah furihama" or something "too good", "wonderful" or "cool". It is much like an expressive word or exclamatory type. The moment someone see a beautiful picture or at times when someone is really enchanted by something this word jumps in instantly.

The most interesting thing about this word is that, it has undergone some moderation with the daily usage. It is simple to use with some youth style and English mixture.

Spring is here, or is it? Well the birds are already out singing. The reason why birds sing is something researchers, poets and authors pondered about for many years. Now according to researchers, when birds are exposed to light for longer periods, certain brain cells trigger a series of hormonal reactions telling them to find a mating partner, which they do by singing. However, the questions still remain as to whether these same brain cells are involved in the reproductive system of the birds. For now lets enjoy the music!

East High School has a couple new students whose singing and dancing prowess will go on display in the highly-anticipated flick High School Musical 3. Matt Prokop and Jemma McKenzie Brown will join Zac Efron, Vanessa Hugdens and the rest of the talented teens. Producers have released little information regarding the two up-and-coming actors’ parts in the movie, but British-born Jemma reportedly beat out 600 other girls for the role. Production kicks off in April with the curtain rising on the High School Musical 3 gang October 24.

Sounds a little flaky, but someone has offered more than $200,444 on eBay for a piece of breakfast cereal that is touted as a lookalike to the US state of Illinois.
Two sisters listed "The Great Illinois Corn Flake" on eBay, promising it has undergone no alterations.
Emily McIntire, a 15-year-old sophomore in high school from Chesapeake, Va., said she was grabbing fistfuls of cereal on her way to class .
"It was almost to my mouth, it didn't look like Illinois at first because it was held the wrong way," said McIntire, but then she noticed the resemblance and said, "Oh my goodness, it's Illinois."
Her 23-year-old sister, Melissa, said their parents suggested selling it for fun and also they offer free shipping to the US.
"At the moment it's residing in a fine jewelry box with a lot of cotton wrapped around it to keep it safe," said Melissa McIntire.

Yeah, this whole week I was busy with exams. I had a lot to study but didn't prepare that well and I was lucky, u know it wasn't that mind-bottling.
That wasn't enough, I've got a bunch of due assignments too, damn!

Addiction to tobacco comes easy, what has been accepted for many decades is that smoking makes the person cool, courageous or more egoist but it doesn't.
For Jean Rommes 59, the president of a small company in US, the crisis became five years ago. On a Monday morning, she had planned to go to work but wound up in the hospital bed, barely able to breath. Although she had quit smoking a decade earlier, 30 years of cigarettes had taken their toll.
After several days in hospital, she was sent home tethered to an oxygen tank, with a raft of medicines and a warning: "If i didn't do something, life was going to continue to be a pretty scary experince."
Women started to smoke during the era of Virginia Slims, when sports events were sponsored by them. Now they are catching up to them and most of them are under treated.

Why do many of us forget to appreciate someone who have helped in his/her effort, might be to get a job, rentign an apartment or whatever.
1. Might be the person who helped was a relative.
2. His/her personality may be undesirable though the help was good.
3. Due to ethnicity.
4. The person became the life partner.
5. Haven't seen after the term of refernce.
6. Interpersonal relationship doesn't give chance to appreciate him.
7. Others hate that person.

It is clear that without their help you will not be in the status where you are now. As soon as we are disappeared from their eyes we forget about the assistance they have given, to get our eyes open to the world.

It could be your parents, a friend, your old school teachers, relatives, someone in the neighbourhood, your degree sponsorer.

At least say "I truly appreciate your help".
